Irish Visitor Numbers Up 60% from 2011
Today, the Guinness Storehouse, Ireland's No.1 International Visitor Attraction, celebrated record visitor numbers on St. Patrick's Day since opening 12 years ago. The Home of Guinness recorded a 20% increase in visitors on March 17th and also celebrated its busiest day ever on Friday 16th March when over 8,300 were welcomed through its doors.
St. Patrick's Day 2012 saw a significant influx of Irish visitors to the country's top attraction, up 60% on the previous year, which represented almost 25% of all visitors on the day. The Guinness Storehouse also saw an increase from France and Germany, and visitors from the UK almost doubled.
Paul Carty, Managing Director at the Guinness Storehouse commented: “This has been the best St. Patrick's weekend in our history at the Guinness Storehouse. Not only have we welcomed record numbers through our doors, the friendly and warm atmosphere here at the Home of Guinness has now formed part of a global effort to make St. Patrick's Day, officially the Friendliest Day of the Year.“
Just some of the highlights from St. Patrick's Day at the Storehouse included an impromptu performance by renowned Irish singer Jerry Fish and a colourful Céilí dance by the Ellen DeGeneres on-air reporter Andy Zenor, who travelled to Ireland to capture the magic of St. Patrick's Day in Dublin for the hit US show. Over the weekend, the Guinness Storehouse welcomed a host of national and international media with a global reach of over 140 million worldwide.
While the hub of activity took place in the heart of the capital, St. Patrick's Day celebrations also extended to over 160 countries around the world uniting to pay homage to our patron saint. GUINNESS World Record (GWR) officials were on the ground in the Guinness Storehouse all weekend and today announced that a total of 435,456 number of people around the world took part in making St. Patrick's Day officially The Friendliest Day of the Year.
To verify that the 17th March 2012 was officially 'The Friendliest Day of the Year', earning it the reputation of one of the greatest St Patrick's Days in history, GWR has spent the past 12 hours painstakingly counting the number of online pledges and the number of people attending St Patrick's Day celebrations around the world for two GWR titles – the most pledges received for a campaign and the largest St Patrick's Day celebration.
On St. Patrick's Day, hundreds of Patricks availed of the special VIP Patrick Pass at the Guinness Storehouse. Anyone with the first name of Patrick, Patricia, Trish, Paddy, and Patricio or indeed any variant of the name were granted complimentary access to the St. Patrick's Day festivities at the Storehouse.
