Signs of Power

Signs of Power is the typographic practice of Irish artist Vanessa Power, specialising in custom lettering, large-scale word-based murals and hand-painted signs. Since 2014, she has painted shop signs and murals across Ireland and beyond. Her style bridges traditional sign painting with the bold aesthetic of pop art. Through vibrant colour, dimensional shading and positive slogans, her work aims to inspire, uplift and create meaningful visual impact.

I chose the slogan “In the Flow” because watching a pint of Guinness settle is such a visual, patient process. It takes time, just like art, and in my case too, craft. When I’m creating, I’m completely in the flow, absorbed in the process, not thinking about anything else. There’s something similar in watching a pint settle, it draws you into the moment. Creating art and waiting for a pint of Guinness require time and patience, but that time is always worth the wait.

The waves in the artwork also represent the River Liffey, as was mentioned in the archive session. So bringing it back to the brief 'It all flows from here'.

I also have attached my inspiration doc. I took the line waves from the original Guinness label, which we saw at the archive session, and incorporated it into the background of the print. And visualised the settling of a pint of Guinness into the letters.
